Davis sophomore guard Cheyenne Hull felt she owed Sumner a thank you. After Sumner traveled to Yakima and defeated top-seeded Davis in the 4A state tournament regional round last weekend, it lit a fire under Davis’ team.

Just a week removed from losing at home to Sumner, the Pirates responded in Tacoma with winning margins of 23, 12, 38 and 16 points to bring home the school’s first girls state championship — only a year after winning the program’s first trophy.

The Davis Pirates girls team entered the State 4A tournament as the undisputed No. 1 seed with just two losses – both of which came against out of state opponents in a holiday tournament.
