Lt. Governor Dan Patrick told CBS News Texas the state will do whatever it takes to secure the southern border. His comments follow a number of Executive Orders issued by Governor Greg Abbott for state agencies to cooperate with the Trump administration.

Trump has vowed punishing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, which are Texas’ biggest international trading partners.

Tariffs will be paused for 30 days. But a 10 percent levy on Chinese goods is still scheduled to go into effect.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sought to reassure Texans about potential higher tariffs and even a trade war in the future. He made his comments in an interview with CBS News Texas, the only TV station in the state that spoke with him following the State of the State address Sunday night.

The tariffs, which also target China, are scheduled to go into effect Tuesday. They prompted immediate efforts to retaliate.
