Hybrid fire ants, well established in East Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and North Carolina, are now infiltrating Southwest Virginia.

Authorities are investigating how fire ants came to be at a rural subdivision but say it is likely they arrived in mulch, plants, turf or soil.
