During his military career, Haig served in various capacities, including as a combat officer in the Korean War. His leadership qualities were recognized as he moved up the ladder, eventually commanding troops during the Vietnam War.

Haig participated in the Vietnam War, commanding a battalion and later a brigade in the 1st Infantry Division. His battalion fought in the Battle of Ap Gu in 1967, earning him the Distinguished Service Cross. Promoted to colonel, Haig returned to Washington, D.C., in 1969 as the primary military aide to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger.
