Railroads ordered GP9s with air tanks on the roof for passenger GP9s to store boiler water for heating passenger cars in part of the fuel tank just for boiler water. Note the BNSF still has 4 SD9s operating in 2012, units #1550-1553. Search the RR archive by BNSF 1553.

Diesel locomotive No. 1685 was built by General Motors Diesel (GMD) in March 1957 for the Midland Railway Company of Manitoba. It was absorbed by BNSF and was donated to the Society by BNSF in July 2010. No. 1685 is used on the Prairie Dog Central in regular service and in some charter service.

Locomotive #1685 is significant because it served all of its time operating in and around Winnipeg from when it was built and delivered as Midland Railway #2 in March 1957 to October 2008 when it was retired as BNSF #1685. It has been a Winnipeg railway icon for over 50 years.

BNSF 1685, was BN Manitoba 2 and earler Midland Railway of Manitoba 2. The Midland was a Great Northern subsidiary which ran on CN trackage rights from the Border to Winnipeg. BNSF 1685 was built by Gemeral Motors of Canada at London ON. in March 1957, originally was steam generator equipped as backup power for the GN Winnipeg passenger train.

As built, 1685 originally had a steam generator for that purpose. 1685 was not substantially modified over the years. Other than carrying the Burlington Northern paint scheme when BN took over the Midland, and then again when she became BNSF 1685 in 1999, the only major modification was the removal of the steam generator.
