These eighteen 4-8-2s (road number 4100 through 4117) each weighed 416,100 lbs and were some of the heaviest 4-8-2s built in the United States. They had 28 x 31 cylinders, 73" drivers, a 240 psi boiler pressure and a tractive effort of 67,900 pounds. Each of the B&M "Mountains" carried a name in addition to its road number.

Boston and Maine is lettered in large gold (sometimes silver or white) characters shaded with red on the tender side. The engine number is applied to the cab side in the same font.

We're out at the Mill Creek Central Railroad for the 2021 Large Engine Meet. Mike, Chris, and Paul were hard at work firing up Elko Northerns 1637 and sixteen ninety. While the guys labored on their engines, railroad volunteers were busy moving the transfer table in the position so Boston and Maine 4115 could be moved out of the Steaming Bay Area.

The Boston and Maine Railroad (reporting mark BM) was a U.S. Class I railroad in northern New England. It was chartered in 1835, and became part of what was the Pan Am Railways network in 1983 (most of which was purchased by CSX in 2022).

The carbody sides and cab were maroon and the roof, underbody and blind ends were black. Initially, there was no Minuteman herald, and the "Boston and Maine" on the side was enclosed in a Chinese Red wing herald (similar to that used on the side of the Flying Yankee ).
