2012年8月28日 · By the early 18th century, tea had become an important part of English social life. So it is not surprisng that by the last half of the 18th century important designers were including boxes for tea storage in their design books.

The first tea chests were mostly made by English cabinet makers and date from about the second quarter of the 18th century. They are often rectangular and shaped like small trunks. They were made in mahogany, or sometimes walnut.

2022年7月28日 · The popularity of the tea chest was challenged in the late 1760s by the tea ‘caddy’, a box with one or two fixed interior tea compartments with removable lids. Caddies were smaller than chests, and a favourite with ladies.

2012年8月18日 · In the 17th century, tea was stored in metal, glass, silver or china containers, In the first half of the 18th century wooden “tea boxes” were being advertised by cabinetmakers. These tea boxes were designed to hold canisters in wood or metal. As tea was a valuable commodity, tea boxes came with lock and key, lest the tea be pilfered.

Tea Caddies were made in wood in box form from the second quarter of the 18th century. The first such boxes were shaped like small chests and contained three metal canisters. They were mostly made of mahogany although a few early ones were of walnut.
