On February 28, 1989, Chittagong Zoo started its journey with 16 animals of four species, namely monkey, lion, deer and Hanuman, in a 6-acre area adjacent to Pahartali USTC Medical College.

As of now, Chittagong Zoo occupies an area of 10.2 acres and houses around 620 animals representing 66 different species.
