2019年12月6日 · Delivering an inclusive education system where the rights of all children, particularly out-of-school children and children in need of special protection, are guaranteed. The Gambia Education Policy aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, prioritizing accessible, equitable, and inclusive quality education.

This study was initiated by UNICEF Gambia under the Out of School Children Initiative (OOSCI) launched in 2010 by the United Nations. The major objective of this study was to find out the number of OOSC and to find out who they are, why they are out of school and what measures should be taken to bring them into the school system.

In 1988, the government of the Gambia began a major education initiative which included a 15-year plan that has emphasized increasing gross enrollment rates, lowering school entry age from 8 to 7, developing basic education curricula, and improving teacher training.

Since we began in 2001, we are proud to have helped establish and improve educational facilities for young children in The Gambia, particularly in the poorer more remote regions of the country.

In The Gambia, 38.7 per cent of male children and 3.8 per cent of female children of the key population group not completing primary education. In turn, 26.7 per cent of children of the target population not completing primary education live in urban areas, with 53.8 per cent no completing in rural areas. Topic 1
