Horses can produce around 3-5% of their body weight in dung every day. T he average 16hh horse produces around 18kg of manure each day, that’s around 6.5 tonnes of the stuff annually, not even accounting for any bedding that goes with it. This can all add up to a very big headache for any horse owner or yard manager!

Remove any soiled bedding and dung every day and take to a dung heap. Add some fresh bedding to the box. Removing the dung helps to reduce fly problems and the risk of infection from parasites. Bedding should be completely renewed when possible. The dung heap rots and produces heat which kills eggs of parasitic worms.

Having a perfectly positioned muck heap isn’t always possible! It should be as far away from your horse as possible but still accessible to you to add to it and vehicles to remove it. DON’T site your muck heap in the same field as your horse. If you have to have it in the same field, fence it off so your horse can’t graze near it.
