The Railway Museum in Nairobi was established many years ago, its principal exhibits have always been a selection of steam locomotives from the (former) Kenya Uganda Railway, latterly East African Railways which became Kenya Railways on the break up of the federation.

These tanks were fitted with an unusual valve that ensured they would overflow if the weight of the water pushed the locomotive over the nine-long-ton axle loading limit. By 1920, the three had been converted to oil burning.

Class 59s ran from Mombasa at sea level to Nairobi, which is more than a mile above sea level. Freight trains totalling 1,200 tons could be pulled on a ruling grade of 1 in 66 (1.5%) behind these behemoths, which ran on a metre gauge and had a track radius of only 290 ft.

Colin Garratt (Steam Trains of the World, 1987) notes that these were part of the Tribal series of metre Mountains built in the early 1950s -- the other two classes were 30 and 31, which had lighter axle loadings.
