In the early part of the period, hospitals, rather than being seen as "places of healing" were more often viewed as "gateways of death". A visitor to such an establishment would see overcrowded wards, surgery being performed without anesthesia and his having placed himself at risk of catching a deadly infection or virus.

They included white-washing walls, removing privies from wards, separating medical and surgical patients, building new wards to allow more cubic space per patient, instigating new ventilation systems, and trying to prevent contaminated air entering the wards.

If you do a search on "Victorian hospitals," you'll find endless results declaring that they were little more than "gateways to death," places of horror and despair from which a patient would need a veritable miracle to escape, let alone recover.
