Also, the drive needs to come from a 2015 rMBP, unless you are willing to give up performance. In 2015, the Apple drive could hit about 1.5 GB/sec. In 2014 the drive could hit around 0.7 GB/sec. And in earlier rMBPs about 0.5 GB.sec.

Jan 1, 2005 · Thanks. More great info. I have iMac with a Fusion drive. The spinning drive gave up just one month out of Apple Care. Anyway, I had it upgraded to an SSD. Super fast now. So want to get an external SSD to back up to and boot from now. The only trouble I had was installing a fresh copy of Sierra back onto the new internal drive configuration.
