After much research, I found out why there are so many sheep references in the Scriptures. Some of the reasons are funny and heartwarming while other comparisons are embarrassingly true.

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

The sheep, representing believers, also "know" Jesus. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but experiential and relational. It suggests a mutual recognition and trust, cultivated through a life of faith and obedience.

But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
