Gator Chris. . Gators eat fruit? Yes they do actually! They do like to occasionally eat fruit like in this case, Casper is eating some small fig fruit. Fruit does not constitute a large part of their diet and 99% of their diet is meat and they are predators, but they will occasionally eat fruit! ~~~You can come swim with me and Casper! If you ...

How often do gators need to eat?? Not often! In captivity they’re often fed once a week, in the wild it’s common to go months without eating anything, and in survival situations they can go over a year! They don’t NEED to eat often, but if offered food they will eat daily and become obese quickly, something that often happens in captivity when people feed them as if they’re a mammal. This also ties into the whole “keep them well fed” crap people constantly say, because it doesn’t matter, they’re

What do gators eat in the wild? Whatever they want 😂 they’re top of the food chain, but surprisingly they’re also all about minimal effort!! They want easy food, this fear of them chasing someone across a football field is literally impossible. They focus much more on east to catch prey in the water and specialize as aquatic ambush predators, NOT terrestrial pursuit predators. Adult humans are also outside their normal menu! Do gators have tongues? Yes they do! They can’t stick it out like a human, it’s attached the whole way, but they do have muscular tongues that allow them to manipulate food in the mouth, as Casper is doing here to separate sand from food! Although he definitely ate a lot of sand 😂. ~~~If you enjoy the video, PLEASE SHARE!! “ How do you tell the gators apart” is one of the most common questions that I get. To me they all look different and I just look at their faces and know which one it is😂. More info from previous posts-At Everglades Holiday Park We feed our gators at the rescue once a week, that’s it, and only a few pieces each. 40lbs between about 20 gators, once a week. And most are overweight from this! That’ll blow a few minds, but you just have to remember your high school biology! Being that they’re ectot

“Do the gators love you, would they protect you, are they tame??” NOOOOOO!!!! This is one of the biggest points I’m constantly trying to get across to people, these are WILD ANIMALS, not pets, not domesticated, and absolutely will kill and eat you if you mess up. People live in the soft world of society and get this false sense of security, they real world is a brutal and uncaring place, and among wild apex predators like this there is no love lost between eating a caretaker. as I’ve explained m

Why do I train the gators to sit up on the side like this?? This is not a normal behavior for them, they don’t naturally sit like this, they have to be TRAINED to sit like this! Gator pets for Big Mac! Do gators like being pet? NOPE, not that I know of, in my 20yrs of working with them I have no evidence of them enjoying being pet anywhere, as you can see Big Mac is highly annoyed by my human desire to pet things 😂. At best I’ve seen them tolerate it, but definitely not seek it out or enjoy it. There are a few videos out there of very clear feeding responses that handlers take advantage of to let them, but the behavior is clearly food oriented. Our rescue gators are wi

Do you think gators can be left or right “handed” like people? I’m guessing yes, and have been playing around with Seven to see! He seems to favor his left. More info on him from previous posts-At Everglades Holiday Park Seven is our biggest gator at EHP, he’s 10ft and likely around 350-400lbs. He has his own enclosure all to himself now, he’s gotten too big and aggro to be in with the other gators as he can easily kill some of the smaller ones in the main enclosure. That of course did not happe

What attributes are required for working with gators? Bravery? Courage? Being insane🤪? Maybe, but the most important one is PATIENCE. Animals work at their pace, not yours, you have to be patient and disciplined in how you work, you can’t rush or be frustrated. This shows alllll the gators clambering up at me, and one by one I back them up and move them around until in the end they’re stationed up at the edge where they should be! And George got a nice surprise from Darth😂😂😂. Sometimes I wal

Wild gator handling! This is how all the “nice” gators you see me working with start when they’re first caught! This is a freshly caught rescue nuisance gator and is NOT aggressive, but defensive, it doesn’t yet understand that I am not going to hurt him and am not a threat, but repeatedly handling him like this will make him realize I don’t hurt him. This is part of the “mellowing out” process. Seeing a gator act like this upsets people, but this is the reality of the work we do, if you don’t h

Gators all stacked up at the door looking for food! This is part 1, I’ll post part 2 later. This shows the importance of training, and the importance of having the skills to handle things when training isn’t working😂. You’ll see in part two that I actually get them up and out of the way lol, but they were being very stubborn!! Once I get one or two they’ll all go. You can also see the importance of multitasking and quick reflexes with all those jaws up close together! And to clarify the obvious

Gator safety PSA! Gators are found in every body of water in Florida, always keep kids and pets away from the water’s edge and only swim in designated swimming areas! Dogs get eaten by gators on a nearly daily basis in Florida as people cluelessly walk their dog near the water, it’s like dangling bacon in front of a gator’s nose! Bad for dogs, and bad for owners as they sometimes get bit too! Be safe and be gator aware guys! ~~~You can come swim with me and Casper! If you want to come join you c

My time with the gators isn’t always feeding and jumping, a lot of time is spent just chilling and hanging out with them, getting them used to my presence and that I’m not a constant food dispenser. This video isn’t as exciting as what I usually show, but I thought it was important to show this is also an important part of the training process and how I acclimate them to me. Our rescue gators are wild caught nuisance gators that would’ve otherwise been destroyed. The state of Florida destroys 8,

Why do the alligators eat SO LITTLE!? More info on him from previous posts-At @evergladesholidaypark Seven is our biggest gator at EHP, he’s 10ft and likely around 350-400lbs. He gets the name 7 for a weird reason- alligators have five toes on the front feet, four toes on the back feet, so a total of 8 back feet toes. Feeding the gators and talking about how little they actually eat!! Although they eat very little, this does NOT mean they won’t pass up the opportunity, they’re ALWAYS hungry. This brings me to the “they must be well fed so they won’t bite you”, which is one of the most obnoxiously incorrect assessments I get about their behavior 😂. My favorite line back is “oh so you think they stop eating when they’re full just like humans right? Because humans stop eating when they’re full???” 😂 Gators wil
